Rod Stewart - "Young Turks"
The first music video to have the dance POPPING in it on MTV.
Album Release: November 1981
Album: Tonight I'm Yours
Single Release: "Young Turks"
Top chart positions: #11 (UK), #5 (US)
This song has been featured in the fictional radio station K-DST in the video
game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
In English slang, a "Young Turk" was a rebellious kind of teenager who
would go against the grain.
Kenny Ortega was the choreographer for this video. He had called me the
day before and asked me to do it. So that night I was in my
neighbor hood of Reseda Ca. at the local restaurant parking lot standing
on a wall practicing my popping with a silhouette of my self on the wall from
the parking lot light. This just happened to be a fluke luck out for me because
when I got to the set Kenny asked me if I could stand on a train open box car.
I said yes because I had practiced for a couple of hours the night before practicing
allot of moves on a small brick wall. This turned out to be the best thing for me.
They put me in the band shot through the end of the video.
Plus I had my own spot in the alley scene. This would be the first time that the
dance Popping and Arm Waves would be scene on MTV in a music video.
1981 DEVO "Were Through Being Cool"
Filmed in L.A.
Choreographer: Kenny Ortega
T-Bopper helped choreograph me on the set.
This turned out to be a great project for me.
I was put as the lead character of the video.
This was a fun project to do. It didn't have anything to do with
Popping or Locking but at that time you made it work with what you have.

Pointer Sisters "I'm So Excited" Featuring: Chain Reaction

Chain Reaction was hired by Kenny Ortega
to bring that street element to the video project.
Using ground popping moves from Chain Reaction Popping style
this added a great visual to the dance number on stage.
Cool Pockets solo's Chain Reaction locking style around while Duece and T-Bopper
use popping and locking moves to solo.
August 29 1982 T-Bopper, Cool Pockets, and Duece
rehearsed for the video.
Filmed Sept. 14, 1982
T-Bopper and Cool Pockets choreographed the dance number on the
stage with popping steps and contemporary steps of that era.
Hershey's commercial 1983 filmed in N.Y.C.
T-Bopper was hired as choreographer and Cool Pockets as a street dancer
in this segment. T-Bopper and Cool Pockets were hired and flown out to N.Y.C.
to choreograph and dance in the Hershey's comercial.
Hershey's wouldn't pay for more L.A. dancers to go to New York to dance so
T-Bopper had to audition New York street dancers. The level of the dancers
at this time in New York were no where near the street dancing ability of the
california dancers and it took longer than normal to get the dancers up to speed.
The segment became real limited with the popping and locking due to the
limitations of the New York dancers but In the end the commercial turned out o.k.

COOLPOCKETS dances far left.
